How to Look After Your Caravan’s Tyres During Long-Term Stays

(Because tyres also get grumpy when ignored)
When you’re living the slow lane life and parked up at a caravan park for weeks or even months, your caravan tyres are probably the last thing on your mind. You’re settled, the kettle’s always on, the chair is in the perfect shady spot… life is good.
Your tyres, however, are quietly thinking: “Are we just… standing here now? Forever?”
Unfortunately, caravan tyres don’t age gracefully when left standing too long. Flat spots, cracking, pressure loss and sun damage can sneak up on you — usually on the morning you’re excited to hitch up and move on.
Let’s make sure your tyres stay happy, round and ready to roll. This is how to look after your caravan's tyres.
1. Maintain Correct Tyre Pressure
(No, tyres don’t inflate themselves)
Even when your caravan isn’t moving an inch, tyre pressure still matters.
Check tyre pressure at least once a month
Inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure
Expect tyres to lose air slowly over time — it’s normal, not sabotage
Under-inflated tyres sag like a tired mattress, while over-inflated tyres age faster than bread left in the sun.
Slow Lane Tip: A tyre pressure gauge costs less than replacing one tyre — or explaining to your partner why you ignored the tyres.
2. Reduce Weight on the Tyres
(Your caravan is not on a diet)
During long stays, caravans tend to gain weight. Extra water, tools, braais, storage boxes, and those “we might need this one day” items all pile up.
To ease the pressure:
Use stabiliser legs or corner steadies correctly
If possible, place axle stands under the axle
Don’t lift the caravan completely off the tyres unless you really know what you’re doing
The aim is to give the tyres a breather, not send the caravan into low orbit.
3. Prevent Flat Spots
(Square tyres are not a design feature)
Flat spots happen when tyres sit in the same position for too long.
To avoid this:
Roll the caravan slightly forward or backward every 4–6 weeks
Even a small movement helps
Think of it as taking your tyres for a very short walk
Your neighbours may wonder what you’re doing. Your tyres will thank you.
4. Protect Tyres from the Sun
(Tyres don’t tan well)
South African sunshine is wonderful — just not for tyres.
Use tyre covers
Park so tyres are shaded where possible
Avoid long-term direct sun exposure
UV rays dry out rubber, causing cracks and stiffness. That “still looks fine” tyre can suddenly become a “how did that happen?” tyre.
5. Inspect Tyres Regularly
(A quick look beats a roadside surprise)
Once a month, give your tyres a quick inspection:
Cracks in the sidewalls
Bulges or uneven wear
Stones or debris stuck in the tread
Dry, flaky rubber
Also check the valves — a cracked valve can quietly deflate a tyre while you’re busy enjoying sundowners.
6. Don’t Forget the Spare Tyre
(The most forgotten hero)
The spare tyre often lives a lonely life, ignored until it’s urgently needed.
Check its pressure
Inspect it for cracking or age damage
Keep it covered and out of the sun
A flat spare is about as useful as a coffee mug with a hole in it.
7. Be Mindful of Tyre Age
(Wrinkles are fine — tyre cracks are not)
Tyres age whether you drive on them or not.
Most caravan tyres should be replaced every 5–7 years
Check the DOT code on the sidewall for the manufacture date
Older tyres are more likely to fail after long stationary periods
If you’re unsure, get them checked before towing. Tyres are cheaper than panel beaters — and nerves.
Final Thoughts
Your caravan tyres quietly carry the full weight of your home on wheels, even while you’re parked up enjoying the slow lane. A little attention during long-term stays can prevent blowouts, breakdowns and unwanted roadside drama.
Look after your tyres, and they’ll return the favour by getting you safely to your next patch of paradise.
